PathPilot®, Tormach’s intuitive CNC control software, is user-friendly and comes free with every Tormach machine, including lifetime updates. Its thoughtful design simplifies CNC operations, including tool management, which is crucial for efficient machining workflows. In this post, Davie with Tormach pre-sales walks us through three common scenarios for changing tools in PathPilot, whether you have an Automatic Tool Changer (ATC), no ATC, or a mix of tools inside and outside the ATC.
1. All Tools Located in the Automatic Tool Changer (ATC)
When all the tools required for a job are already loaded into the ATC, PathPilot takes full advantage of this setup. The system automatically manages tool changes throughout the operation. For example, if a job starts with a facing tool and then requires a 1/4-inch endmill, PathPilot seamlessly instructs the machine to put away the current tool, retrieve the next one from the ATC, and continue machining without operator intervention.
This scenario offers the highest efficiency, as the ATC minimizes downtime and allows for uninterrupted machining.
2. No ATC: Handloading Tools Manually
If your machine doesn’t have an ATC, PathPilot ensures smooth operations by prompting the operator for every tool change. After completing the operation with one tool, the machine will raise to the G30 position and display an on-screen prompt for the next tool. The operator then installs the new tool manually and presses the cycle start button to resume machining.
This setup is ideal for smaller operations or entry-level machines without an ATC. PathPilot’s prompts keep the process straightforward and organized.
3. Some Tools Missing from the ATC
In cases where the ATC contains most, but not all, of the required tools, PathPilot bridges the gap seamlessly. When the system encounters a tool not available in the ATC, it pauses the operation, raises the spindle, and prompts the operator to load the missing tool manually. Once the tool is installed, a quick press of the cycle start button resumes machining.
This hybrid approach ensures flexibility for jobs that require tools beyond the capacity of the ATC or for specialized tools that aren’t typically loaded.
Final Thoughts on PathPilot’s Tool Management Flexibility
PathPilot’s intelligent tool management system adapts to any setup, whether you’re running an ATC, handloading tools, or using a combination of both.
